Cambridge IELTS Book 16 Academic writing Test 1 – Task 2

This is a ‘Two Questions’ type question. The background information says…

‘In some countries, more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.’

Next there are two questions.

‘What are the reasons for this?’ and ‘How can people research?’

Accordingly, the structure should be as follows:

o Introduction – background to the situation

o Body paragraph 1 – the reasons for the situation

o Body paragraph 2 – how people can research for the information

o Conclusion – your opinion

The question analysis, after brainstorming, can be presented as follows on a table.

Humans have always been interested in their own living quarters not only about the current situation but also how things could be in the future. However, now in certain areas of the world a new trend has commenced to probe into the past of the premises where people reside. It is exiting to explore the causes and how they could get about getting such information which are factual.

For a start, considering the reasons for their inquisitiveness, one would be to know the historical background of their residence which will bring prestige. Some of these have historical data extending to ancient eras, which brings fame to the residents. Accordingly, its value will jack up, when they want to resell. Another breakthrough is if any famous celebrities have used the place for living or visited to spend a holiday, and that adds further value to their purchased rate. In fact, owners can use it as a touristic attraction rather than just a home. For example, many ancient castles around the world have been converted into tourist attractions.

Moving to the next factor, there are number of approaches to gather past details about such old buildings. To initiate, those who are resided can inquire from the neighbours who can recall word of mouth may provide valuable information. Next, best available source is the city council. It is generally a practice that such places secure valuable information in the area. To go along, there could be some local authorities responsible for land and building in these communities, to inculcate searchers. Furthermore, browsing the web could bring results too and there may be museums in the respective area which may have information pertaining to the locations, that could bring exclusiveness.

To sum up, it certainly is a growing concern to investigate information with regard to mansions owned by citizens in some countries by using possible avenues. In my opinion many are doing this perhaps for their own interest, but it certainly means an added value to their property.
